Hypoglycemia Waiver

WHAT IS HYPOGLYCEMIA

Hypoglycemia is the abnormal decrease of sugar in the blood. Humans as well as animals are subject to this, but it is generally seen in youngsters rather than adults. The small breeds of dogs seem to be most prone. If a puppy goes hypoglycemic the eyes may roll back in the head and the pup will have trouble standing, if it can stand at all. If your pup experiences this you will know it at once. Your pup can be fine one minute and experience hypoglycemia the next.

SHOULD THIS CONDITION OCCUR YOU MUST ACT IMMEDIATELY. THE PUP NEEDS SUGAR. USING YOUR FINGERTIP, DIP YOUR FINGER IN HONEY AND PLACE IT IN THE PUPPIES MOUTH ON ITS TONGUE, MAKE SURE THE PUPPY SWALLOWS THE HONEY, YOU MAY RUB HIS THROAT GENTLY TO ENSURE THE HONEY GOES DOWN PROPERLY.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT IT

These small breeds should eat at least 3 and preferably 4 times a day. You cannot be content with just placing food in front of the pup and hoping for the best. It is your responsibility to see that the animal eats properly. While most puppies will be eating dry puppy food, you may need to get a little creative. Moisten the dry food with warm water and you may have to mix a little canned chicken dog food or a little chicken baby food. You might want to warm this food in the microwave.

Another option is to administer 3 times a day, 3CC (1 SYRINGE FULL) of Nutri-Cal to the puppy as your best assurance against Hypoglycemia. You may want to continue the Nutri-Cal for 3-4 weeks. Stress can also be a factor , so it best not to involve the puppy in any heavy playing for the first several weeks. Bringing this puppy home is no different than bringing a human infant home.

While there is no guarantee that a puppy won’t go hypoglycemic if you follow these directions you should have no problems. If at any time your puppy refuses to eat you should get the pup into the vet.
